He is married to his favorite person, and loves his three children quite a little bit (aged 10, 15 and 17). He is passionate about authentic learning, technology with purpose, and creating at least one new thing every day. In short, he teaches, and learns. A lot.
Congrats and I’m glad you had that opportunity, Ben. It’s encouraging that an educator such as yourself is being invited into the national discussion.
“A Chief Innovation Officer” would be even better than CTO.
Was anyone talking about using tech to study great plays? I’m concerned that “future” doesn’t simply revolve around new tech and coding. We need to find exciting, relevant ways to teach hearts and minds — great dramatic literature from the past needs to be included. The arts teach us what it is to be human.

I think you would be pleasantly surprised by how much humanity was present at this event. Lots of folks were talking about the different ways in which can go “beyond the common core.” I still think we can do more, though.

I’m not concerned about the grownups so much as the kids, Ben Wilkoff . I’m concerned that the grownups are swinging that pendulum again — all the way to STEM, coding, comp sci, with blatant disregard for the arts needing to be in every classroom. I wondered if anyone was talking about an arts program that has been brought to scale via technology.

I don’t see them as diametrically opposed. The act of design is an incredibly powerful and useful art. Many folks are (and will be) talking about coding is a creative art. I believe there is enough room for art and science in becoming #futureready.

Yes, there is clearly an overlap, Ben. Sir Ken Robinson talks about this very convincingly. However, the drum beat is all about science.

I actually think the drum beat is for math and reading/writing (with common core), but I think there is a syncopated beat of STEM.
