Productivity Hack: Create a shortcut to a google doc and put it into a shared dropbox folder.

While Google Docs now allows you to share files, I find that Dropbox is so much better at keeping a team on the same page as they are “real files” on the hard drive syncing things together. But what if we just added a bunch of links to the important docs and made folders and then shared the dropbox folders with anyone who needed them.

Is there something I am missing here? Has anyone had success with this kind of an idea?

    Wouldn’t the extra step you might be missing is the work to set sharing permissions for each Google Doc to match the people who have access to Dropbox? Assuming the Google Docs aren’t public, of course. It could be a little extra work, but worth it if it’s easier for everyone to always look in one place (Dropbox) without having to check a second (Google Docs).

    There might be a good idea there somewhere, and an even better domain: dropdocs.com. Someone has it parked at GoDaddy.

    I get that it is easier just to use Google Docs for sharing but Google Docs doesn’t sync folders on your desktop (or with other computers/users). It also doesn’t do the kinds of formats (for editing) that can be done in Dropbox (i.e., Photoshop files, Skitch files, etc.). I also find that keeping all of my important files is easier to do in Dropbox. However, collaboration and editing is hands down better in Google Docs, so I generally start docs in there. I wanna keep on thinking about what might be possible with doing .URL files in Dropbox folders.

    suzanne rogers While I like the idea of using a web-based system for keeping track of Google Docs, I am really looking for the convenience of anytime I want to go to find a an important document, I can search through my files that are both on my hard drive and in my Google Docs because I have linked them.

    Greg Garner I hadn’t looked at Syncplicity for a while, but I will definitely give it a shot. The only issue I see is that it will only sync with one folder and I will have to figure out a way of sharing the files synced from my google docs within another Dropbox folder.

    I’m probably overthinking this now, but I think I may want to play some more.
