Your Identity is Plural

I love the digital literacy conversation going on within the #etmooc, but I worry that the conversation around a digital identity is too singular in nature. We should be striving to make a plural identity, one that can change over time. And, we should strive to instill this concept of a plural identity into our learners from a young age.

90 Days of Good.

I’m trying to figure out how to tell 90 good stories about the learning going on around me, and I need a bit of help. How do you tell stories of goodness currently? How would you go about doing it if you were given the task of sharing the goodness widely and getting others to tell those stories with you?

I will be talking about this project more over the next few weeks, so get ready.

There is No One Community to Rule them All

There is no single community to rule them all. There is no single goal for learning. There is also no single monolithic community for Youtube. And, we shouldn’t pretend that there is.

What are you doing to highlight the voices around you and your own "pocket communities"?

The Joy of Discovery is the Only Way To Truly See

Sometimes we forget about the joy of discovery in favor of all of our other responsibilities. Joelle Warsh called attention to this, and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I believe that we engage in the process of Seeing things clearly by experiencing that process of discovery. How do you see that process of Discovery?

Isn't Everything "Real Life"?

I have been a part of a lot of discussions around whether or not schools are "real life" or whether they should prepare us for "real life". But, I think that is a strange way of framing authentic learning. All life is real, and we should try and make sure our working worlds and our learning worlds meet each other to create a reality that we want to be a part of.

Thank you to Ginger Lewman for inspiring this vlog: http://gingerlewman.wordpress.com/2013/02/26/ask-us-to-need-to-learn/

Correction: Ginger talks about the "Real World" we are preparing kids for more often than "Real Life", but I think it still counts.

I Feel Lucky to Be within a School

This is my mini-Ode to schools. I was so happy to have the opportunity to teach and learn within a school recently, that I thought I would talk about it here and ask if you feel lucky too.

Why do you feel lucky to be within a school?

Second-Chance Serendipity and Your Long Tail Learning

I was flabbergasted to learn that one of my favorite current collaborators and I had shared a conversation four years ago. Neither of us recognized the opportunity that serendipity was presenting to us, and yet we got a second chance to learn from one another. Because we both have our own "Long Tail Learning", we were able to recognize our mutual interest and capitalize on it.

Time-Bounded Learning Experiments

Collaborations don’t last forever. But, if you chronicle them as they are happening and if you talk about what you are learning, the conversations that are built upon them will never die. Just become The Fellowship of the Ning is going to stop making new videos, it doesn’t mean that their over 600 videos will somehow disappear. We should all be trying to create Learning Time Capsules out of our daily reflections so that we can continue the community even after we have moved on to other projects.

Whispering for Change

I love the way in which Sheri Edwards speaks about teaching and learning. Her poetry is wonderful and deserves to be thought through. The challenge that I took from her latest vlog is that she would like to whisper with fellow teachers and leaders in order to change education. I’m game, are you?

Are We Done #CoLearning Yet?

Our communities exist and grow based upon their use, but we should join and leave those communities at will. We should be a part of them rather than own them. We should allow things to go fallow and then pick them up again and get excited. Communities do not die so long as one person takes it upon themselves to carry the banner and continue on.
