I really loved the idea that Scott Hazeu floated on Learning Paths being cyclical with his #etmooc  vlog, and I wanted to respond in kind.

If you would like to watch the original video, it is here: The Nature Trail

I would love to hear more people speak about the learning paths that they are taking (and those of their students as well). The conversation is wonderful.

  1. The learning path/cycle metaphor really resonates with me. Your thoughts about remembering and sharing prior knowledge, also got me thinking about how knowledge can be a curse  – especially for the one initially laying out the path. Gaining knowledge is certainly empowering and a blessing, but it can also make us forget what it was like not to know. I think we sometimes develop amnesia about the journey of discovery. We are often left with some answers, but not many of the questions or the failed hypotheses that got us there.

  4. Kim Wilkens, I could not agree more. I think that is why I am finding it so important to reflect upon learning as it is happening. By documenting your process, including the dead ends and failed projects, we are going to be able to articulate just how learning happens, without glossing over the hard work that it requires.

I don’t want to forget what learning entails. It is one of the reasons that I have found my Twitter archive so valuable (now that Twitter has given me searchable access to it). I am going back through and seeing just how lost I was on the first go round (not to say that I am not lost now, I’m just lost about different things).

Thank you for that comment, it makes a lot of sense to me.

Oh, and Phil Macoun, you should respond to both of us via video. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

  7. You are awesome. I just commented over on youtube, and I think your ideas are really powerful.

I think you should pose that question about content out to the whole course. What is the value of content expertise (especially in Math and Science) in a connected learning model?
