    The cost of not doing anything…

    I was in a great meeting this week where we were considering whether
    or not to go ahead with a full scale implimentation of the Moodle LMS
    for assessment purposes in our district. It was a great meeting not
    because of the topic but the way it was being handled.
     
    We were talking about the absolute costs of an open source LMS and of
    staying with a custom-built assmessment solution. We were really
    looking for a venn diagram moment when one of the curriculum and
    instruction representatives said something really smart: “There is a
    cost to not doing anything as well. It may not be a dollar cost, but
    it will cost the teachers the ability to know more about their kids’
    knowledge and it will cost the kids some learning opportunities.”
    (Paraphrased by me.)
     
    Too often we do not think about the cost of doing nothing or of doing
    things too slowly. Does appathy in the face of huge choices cost our
    kids the best learning years of their lives?
     
    So, it got me thinking: What are the costs of doing nothing (or doing
    very little) to change school?

    New Responsibility

    I was thinking about waiting until I got a little further into the
    project to start blogging about it, but since I made the choice to
    start blogging daily, I have really found that this forum let’s me
    think through all of the things that I need to.
     
    So the new responsibility is this: I have been put in charge of
    administrating multiple moodle installations in our district. The
    reason why this new charge I have been given is so strange to me is
    that up until 2 months ago, the only “official” moodle installation in
    our district was at a high school in parker, which I had little to do
    with.
     
     The reason for the shift is nothing short of an economic and
    pedagogical perfect storm. Our district had slowly been building the
    capacity for more and more teachers to start asking for a way of
    teaching and engaging with their students online, and with the failure
    of our bond election, the only choice for an LMS was to have someone
    who was already working in open source to implement and support a
    solution like moodle.
     
    The best part is, however, that no one I have talked to thinks that we
    are settling for something. From all of the initial conversations, all
    stakeholders believe that professional development, online learning,
    and blended learning fit well within a vision of moodle that includes
    outside assessments and google apps for communication.
     
    I guess the only reason for this post is to ask for advice. If you
    were asked to design and implement learning environments for an online
    school, a professional development program, and a blended model
    (online and in centers/schools) using moodle, what would you make sure
    to do (or not do)?
     
    While I have a definite vision for the way forward, I am not the
    smartest person in the room (considering that I have no idea how big
    this room is). I want to know more… Always more.

    Help please: Assessment Engine Needed

    I have had multiple meetings this week around the topic of online assessments. Much to my surprise (well, not really), it looks like there is a lot of passion behind creating, hosting, and using assessments effectively. The needs of our district, as far as I can tell, are to have a single place to create all assessment items, tag these items with “essential learnings”, create sophisticated assessment banks,  administer them as best practice for interim assessments, and have all of the scores from these assessments feed into our Infinite Campus (our information management system). No small task.

    However, I don’t have a good answer for this issue, mostly because online assessments have always been a pretty dry topic to me. My orientation is to do nearly all assessments as a part of an online project, something that is more authentic than a question bank can hold. So, here are the options that I have delved into so far:

    1. http://hotpot.uvic.ca/ – Hot potatoes seems to be a very simple way to create and host assessments, but this needs to be held somewhere and it doesn’t allow for a lot of tagging or reporting as a native format.
    2. Moodle Quizzes – The built in Moodle Quizzes are pretty robust, but they do not seem to be that portable outside of moodle, and I do not see the ability to categorize all questions and assessments as a part of a greater organization. Putting these together with Infinite Campus looks like it could be done with some integration, but I don’t think that it is worth it if the assessments can’t be analyzed for effectiveness and tagged with many different sorting abilities. (Although the tagging does look like it is coming in 2.0)
    3. Ed Mastery (Seriously, this is the best link I could find) – This is the proprietary solution that our online school will be using because more than half of the assessments are already stored there. It has a lot of the functionality that we need, but it is somewhat of an unknown because the company does not have a community of users (as far as I can tell). And, it will have a license fee per student.
    4. http://www.qtitools.org/ – This looks super promising in terms of getting all of the information created, stored, accessed, and assessed. However, it looks hard. I’m not sure that the majority of the people creating assessments would be able to tackle it.

    So, the help I need is this:

    Do you know of any other Assessment Engine that is out there that will cover all of the bases that I need? What direction should I bee looking in to make sure that I am researching every possible angle.

    Making moving easy…

    Every night this week and last I have been packing. I have been
    packing up my family to move us to someplace better, with more room
    and more possibilities (and more than one bathroom). This move has
    gotten me thinking a lot about what to keep and what to let go of.
    Without extending a metaphor too far out, it has also gotten me
    thinking about how to move an entire school or even a district from
    digital learning systems that they currently use, to ones that have
    more possibility and room to grow.
     
    And, what can we leave behind in this move. When you move from an
    email based system of communication to a feed and “friend” based
    system of communication (twitter, facebook, or even project wikis),
    what is no longer neccessary?
     
     
    When you move from a server based architecture for storing learning
    objects to a cloud based repository, what is gained and what is lost?
     
    The specifics are becoming more and more clear to me as I pack things
    up. As I pack up our assessments for the online school, getting them
    ready to move again, we can leave behind proprietary formats. We need
    to be able to plug them in anywhere and reuse them for many purposes.
     
    As I pack up all of our content, I realize that we can leave all html
    pages without an edit button on them.
     
    And, as I try to put all of our tools and resources for collaborative
    and connected learningn into their box to be ported over to a new LMS
    or to new PD spaces, I am realizing that there is no box big enough to
    hold all of them.
     
    Every tool must be allowed to connect to others, just like every
    person must be able to connect. If there are tools that do not
    connect, they will be packed away permanantly and placed under the
    stairs.
     
    Well, I am off to pack some more, but I will continue to think about
    what can and can’t be thrown out when we make big shifts in education.
    I hope to return to this theme soon when I figure more out.

    Comment on Educational Insanity’s Blog post

    This blog post is taken from a comment I wrote on Educational Insanity’s blog post, Reflections from NECC – Equity, Diversity, Social Justice. I thought is was important enough to repeat it here.

    I really appreciate your honest assessment of NECC 2008. Although I cannot be there in person (my wife is ready to give birth any day now), I did want to show support for sessions that discuss issues of diversity, equity, and social justice. I’m not sure how to deal with the (perceived?) lack of racial diversity in the edublogosphere or at the Blogger’s Cafe, but I do think that we need to be reaching out. Do you know if Taking It Global (http://takingitglobal.org) is doing a session at NECC? Getting someone from that organization to come into the Blogging arena of NECC would go a long way to ushering in an air of social justice and diversity.

    The other question I have is about the diversity of the conference in general. If there is a lack of diversity (or at least a lack of people talking about it), is that because the people that are attending are mostly getting their school districts to pay for it? If a school district cannot buy books (as is the case in the documentary that you just mentioned, which I hadn’t heard of because I don’t get HBO… Is there some other way I can see it?), how can they send teachers to a (fairly) pricey conference.

    Talk about equity, the conference should have scholarships for districts that are looking to be forward thinking, but don’t have the funds. (Is this something that is possible.)

    I would love to have a larger debate in the edubloggosphere about the issues of equity, diversity, and social justice, but I wonder how valuable it can be for a white folks (of which I am one) to debate the issues without getting some voices outside of the echo chamber to take part. Any ideas?

    Beyond Rubrics

    This podcast was created because of a discussion I had with my students about the merits of rubrics in a School 2.0 classroom. The data was mixed. Some students felt very comfortable with rubrics because it let them know how to get an A. Others believed that rubrics would hinder their creativity and ability to be authentic. Although I had asked students to help me create a rubric for an assignment, I had never asked them if they thought a rubric was a good idea at all. This podcast is a summary and a discussion of what I decided to do: Student-Centered Youbrics.

    What does support look like in School 2.0?

    Support is such an essential part of education, but many of us who are looking ahead to a technologically rich educational experience sometimes forget this. Because we are savvy, we expect others (including our students) to be savvy. I created this podcast in order to flesh out a few of the ways that we can support teachers who want to transition to School 2.0. The basic points that I came up with were:
    1. All teachers need an aggregator starter pack.
    2. School 2.0 must be framed in terms (and using tools) that most teachers understand.
    3. Small groups of teachers must conduct relevant research within the specific school before many teachers will buy in.
    4. School 1.0 teachers should engage in assessing School 2.0 products from the small group’s classrooms as a way of transitioning into a more collaborative model.

    I have also decided to start including the chapter information and links as part of the show notes for those of you who do not have access to a podcatcher that recognizes enhanced podcasts.

    How do we assess School 2.0?
